Planting: Place flat side down in a shallow pot or tray with soil minimum 8cm deep.

Growing on: Transplant into pots once several roots have taken
New leaf shoots will appear and grow upwards.
Once established Will produce pink and yellow flowers these turn into pinkish red, edible prickly pears

This Plant is not fussy about soil conditions,and are cold hardy to 30 degrees below zero
They can take regular pruning to maintain shape. Always cut at the joints, where the two pads meet

Growing indoors: In pots they don't grow to more than a few feet tall (maximum). They do best in full sunlight with very little water if over watered and they will rot.

GROWING OUTDOORS: prickly pears look especially good in silhouette against a sunset. They also make very effective security barriers. Water sparingly and improve soil drainage in areas that receive a lot of rain.
Prickly pear cactus have deep green branching pads, and can grow up to 15 feet tall if left unpruned

The sap from the pads can be used in first aid similar to the aloe vera plant. Simply cut off a portion of a pad, crush it, and squeeze the juice onto a cut, burn, or bruise

Cactus pears have the texture of watermelon and a mild, and a sweet taste There are black seeds inside about the size of a pea . They should be thickly peeled before eating.
These fruits are high in fiber .

Handle with care
Both catus and fruit have clumps of fine needles
Use tongs, gardening fork/trowel , or cardboard to handle any part of cactus. You should also wear leather gloves or two layers of cotton gloves
